New Jersey’s Bill A-3894, effective February 3, 2025, updates fire safety regulations in two key ways:

  1. Portable Fire Extinguishers No Longer Required by State Law: Buildings are no longer required to have a portable fire extinguisher to receive a certificate of occupancy or compliance. However, local municipalities may still require them, so property owners should check local regulations.

  2. Labeling for Backup Power Sources: Any building with a secondary power source (like a generator or battery backup) must have a warning label within 18 inches of the main electrical panel and meter to highlight potential dangers.

These updates do not affect the requirement for smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. The Division of Fire Safety is working on further clarifications and rule updates related to these changes.
